Sooryavanshi’s Record-Breaking Performance
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old batting prodigy, delivered a match-winning performance for India against Zimbabwe in the opening T20I in Harare. Sooryavanshi scored 50 runs off just 19 balls, achieving his maiden international half-century in 18 deliveries. This explosive innings saw him become the youngest player in men’s international cricket to score a fifty, surpassing the previous record held by Nepal’s Kushal Malla.
His impressive knock was crucial as India successfully chased down a target of 126 runs in just 13.2 overs, securing a seven-wicket victory. Sooryavanshi’s international career had a quiet start earlier this month during India’s tour of England, where he recorded scores of 14, 13, and 15, leading to his omission from the final T20I as India lost the series.
However, a return to the Harare Sports Club proved to be a turning point. This was the same venue where he had previously scored 175 runs off 80 balls in the Under-19 World Cup final earlier this year. After taking four deliveries to settle into his rhythm, Sooryavanshi launched a counterattack, hitting four boundaries and four sixes, effectively dismantling Zimbabwe’s bowling attack with his fearless strokeplay.
His innings concluded shortly after reaching his half-century when Richard Ngarava dismissed him. Following Sooryavanshi’s departure, Ishan Kishan contributed 35 runs, and captain Shreyas Iyer remained unbeaten with 28 runs, comfortably completing the chase.
Captain Iyer’s Maiden Victory
The victory also marked a significant personal milestone for Shreyas Iyer, who secured his first win as India’s T20I captain. Iyer had faced a challenging start to his captaincy, having lost all seven of his previous matches during tours of Ireland and England. The 31-year-old celebrated his maiden win in style, praising both his bowlers and batters for their execution of the team’s strategies.
Iyer expressed his satisfaction, stating, “Exceptional. They were tremendous in their execution. Can’t be more happier to get my first win.” He also explained his decision to bowl first after winning the toss, anticipating the bounce on the pitch. He highlighted the exceptional start provided by Mayank Yadav, who prevented the opposition from gaining momentum.
Mayank Yadav set the tone for India’s bowling attack by dismissing Brian Bennett with the very first ball of the match. Yadav finished with two wickets, while Prince Yadav also claimed two scalps, contributing to restricting Zimbabwe to 125 runs for seven wickets. Zimbabwe’s Struggle Against Indian Attack
Mayank Yadav made a successful return to international cricket, consistently bowling at speeds exceeding 145 kmph. He targeted the back of a length area, hurrying the batters with his pace. His impact was evident when he had Dion Myers caught in the fifth over, as Myers failed to time his pull shot against Yadav’s extra pace.
Zimbabwe faced immediate pressure after Bennett’s first-ball dismissal and struggled to 26 runs for three wickets during the powerplay. Captain Sikandar Raza attempted to score against Shivam Dube but was caught at deep square leg, leaving Zimbabwe at 32 runs for four wickets in the eighth over.
Despite the early setbacks, Ryan Burl (26 runs off 35 balls), Wessly Madhevere (38 runs off 34 balls), and Tadiwanashe Marumani (27 runs not out off 20 balls) managed to stay at the crease, helping their team surpass the 120-run mark. Ravi Bishnoi, who had a challenging comeback in the UK, ended with figures of one wicket for 24 runs in his four overs.
