Ashok Sharma, a pacer, has made his debut for India in the opening match of the T20I series against Zimbabwe in Harare. Journey to International Cricket
Ashok Sharma, who hails from Rampura near Jaipur, is the son of a farmer. His path to international cricket involved progressing through district-level tournaments. His breakthrough came during the 2025-26 domestic season, where he showcased his talent in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. In that season, he secured 22 wickets across 10 games, demonstrating his effectiveness as a bowler.
Beyond the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Sharma has also taken 14 wickets in the Ranji Trophy. His performances in domestic cricket led to his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in the 2026 season. He played for the Gujarat Titans, where he was noted for his pace. During a match against the Rajasthan Royals, Sharma delivered a ball at 154 kmph to Dhruv Jurel, which was recorded as the fastest delivery in the IPL at that time. He is considered one of India’s fastest bowlers and represents Rajasthan in domestic cricket.
Mentorship and Team Composition
Ahead of the Zimbabwe ODIs, Ashok Sharma expressed gratitude towards Gujarat Titans’ coach Ashish Nehra. Sharma mentioned that he frequently approached Nehra with any doubts or questions he had about his bowling. He recalled Nehra’s assurance that he would be available to help even at midnight. Sharma would often visit Nehra’s room after matches to review videos of his bowling, seeking advice on areas for improvement and perfection. He regards Nehra as a mentor, crediting him for significant learning and assistance during the IPL season.
The Indian team for the first T20I against Zimbabwe included a mix of established players and other debutants. Alongside Ashok Sharma, teen sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was also named in the playing eleven. In a new development, India also named concussion substitutes for specific positions for the first time. These included Suryansh Shedge (batter, all-rounder), Prabhsimran Singh (wicketkeeper), Harsh Dubey (spinner), and Yash Thakur (pace bowler).
Zimbabwe Team and Injury Update
The Zimbabwe team for the match included Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Dion Myers, Sikandar Raza (captain), Ryan Burl, Wessly Madhevere, Tadiwanshe Marumani (wicketkeeper), Brad Evans, Newman Nyamhuri, Richard Ngarava, and Blessing Muzarabani.
Ahead of the series, Zimbabwe batter Milton Shumba was ruled out of the T20I series due to a right hamstring injury. Innocent Kaia was named as his replacement in the squad. The series opener took place in Harare on Thursday.
