ICC confirms qualification pathway for cricket's LA28 Olympic return

The India women’s cricket team has secured a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, marking a significant milestone for the sport’s return to the Olympic Games after a hiatus of 128 years. This qualification comes despite the team’s early exit from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, where they failed to advance past the group stage.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed the qualification pathway for the LA28 Olympics, which will feature six teams each in both men’s and women’s T20 competitions. India earned Asia’s sole automatic berth by being the highest-placed eligible finisher from the continent in the recent T20 World Cup. Despite a six-wicket defeat to Australia in their final Group A match, the team finished ahead of other Asian nations in the tournament.

Qualification Pathway Details

The qualification system allocates one automatic spot each for Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania. These berths are determined by the highest-placed eligible finishers in the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup, with each continent limited to one representative. Alongside India, Australia secured Oceania’s spot, while South Africa qualified from Africa by reaching the knockout stage. Great Britain, represented by England in ICC competitions, claimed Europe’s place. These four teams are the first to qualify for the women’s event at LA28.

The fifth spot for the women’s competition could go to the host nation, the USA. For this to happen, the USA must break into the top 15 of the ICC Women’s T20I rankings at any point between June 30 and December 31, 2026. If the USA does not meet this requirement, the berth will be awarded to the highest-ranked non-qualified team in the ICC Women’s T20I rankings as of March 1, 2027.

The sixth and final Olympic spot will be decided through the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027. This eight-team event will feature the highest-ranked eligible nations that have not yet secured qualification. The West Indies, which competes as a combined ICC member, cannot participate as a single team at the Olympics because it is not an IOC-recognised National Olympic Committee (NOC). If the West Indies are among the highest-ranked non-qualified teams, a separate Caribbean qualifying tournament will determine which nation advances to the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Men’s Competition and Tournament Structure

For the men’s T20 event at LA28, the USA men’s team is on course to compete as hosts. Other teams in line for the men’s competition include India, Britain, and South Africa. The men’s qualification pathway also allocates one team each from Asia, Europe, Africa, and Oceania based on ICC rankings at a cut-off date of December 31, 2026. Australia and New Zealand will vie for the Oceania spot, while the USA will represent the Americas if it remains within the top 15 of the ICC rankings.

The sixth team in the men’s competition will also emerge from a global qualifier, featuring the next eight highest-ranked teams that have not yet qualified. Similar to the women’s event, if the West Indies are among these teams, a regional tournament will determine which NOC represents the region in the global qualifier. The winner of this global qualifier will complete the six-team field for the men’s competition at LA28.

ICC chairman Jay Shah described cricket’s return to the Olympics as a landmark moment, highlighting the clear pathway for member nations. ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta added that the qualification model balances competitive standards with global representation. Each qualified nation will be allowed to select a 15-member squad. The six teams in both men’s and women’s events will be split into two groups of three. The top two teams from each group will contest the gold-medal match, while the third and fourth-placed teams will play for bronze. All cricket matches at the 2028 Olympic Games will be held at a purpose-built venue in Pomona.

The ICC confirmed the qualification criteria for cricket’s return to the Olympic Games on Monday.
