Sooryavanshi’s Omission and Team Strategy
The decision to not debut Vaibhav Sooryavanshi during India‘s recent series against Ireland has sparked debate among former cricketers. While some, like Sunil Gavaskar and Mohammed Kaif, advocated for his inclusion, others, including R Ashwin, supported the team management’s approach. The young batter, who had a strong performance in the IPL 2026 and with India A, remained on the bench throughout the series, which India ultimately lost.
Team management, including captain Shreyas Iyer and the coaching staff, cited a desire to back their T20 World Cup-winning core. However, this reasoning has been questioned, particularly given the omission of Suryakumar Yadav, the World Cup-winning captain, from the squad. Critics argue that the selection process appeared inconsistent.
Gavaskar emphasized that form should have been the primary consideration for selection in Belfast. He suggested that Sooryavanshi could have played in both matches, potentially opening with Abhishek Sharma in one game and having Sanju Samson open in another. Gavaskar acknowledged that Sooryavanshi might not have guaranteed a win but stressed that the Ireland series presented an ideal opportunity to introduce a young player.
Expert Opinions on Sooryavanshi’s Debut
Mohammed Kaif echoed Gavaskar‘s sentiments, stating that Sooryavanshi‘s name should have been in the best XI based on his form. Kaif highlighted the inconsistency in the team’s logic, pointing out that previous captains like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav were replaced despite their successes, with the stated aim of bringing in younger players. He argued that if the team was truly looking for youngsters, Sooryavanshi, who won the Orange Cap in the IPL, should have been considered.
Former Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary also criticized the coaching staff, suggesting they were adhering to preconceived notions rather than acknowledging current form. He noted that players who performed well in the T20 World Cup, which occurred before the IPL, were selected over Sooryavanshi, despite his recent strong performances.
In contrast, R Ashwin offered a different perspective, arguing that there was no immediate place for Sooryavanshi in the current XI. Ashwin explained that players like Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma do not participate in Test or ODI cricket and rely on the T20 format to maintain their relevance within the team. He suggested that if Sooryavanshi were to play, it should be during tours where these incumbent openers are not present, such as the Zimbabwe tour.

Looking Ahead to the England Series
The debate surrounding Sooryavanshi‘s debut now shifts to India‘s upcoming five-match T20I series against England, which begins on July 1. Gavaskar has strongly advocated for Sooryavanshi‘s inclusion from the first match, considering it non-negotiable after India‘s performance in Ireland.
Gavaskar suggested that India might need to adjust their batting order to accommodate Sooryavanshi. He proposed playing him as an opener or at number three, potentially by dropping an out-of-form middle-order batter. While acknowledging that Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have performed well as openers, Gavaskar believes that Sooryavanshi‘s inclusion could put pressure on the England bowlers.
The upcoming series against England is expected to be more challenging than the Ireland series. The decision regarding Sooryavanshi‘s debut on July 1 remains a key point of discussion for the team management.
