Nagelsmann’s Departure and Germany’s World Cup Performance
Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down from his role as head coach of the Germany men’s national team following their early exit from the World Cup 2026. The German Football Association (DFB) confirmed his resignation on Friday, granting his request to be relieved of his duties. This decision comes after Germany’s elimination in the last 32 of the tournament, where they were defeated by Paraguay on penalties.
Nagelsmann, who was appointed in September 2023, initially expressed a desire to remain in charge after the match, stating, “I’m not someone who runs away.” However, he later reflected on the situation, explaining that the decision was difficult but necessary for the team to have a fresh start after such a significant disappointment. The DFB’s sporting director, Rudi Voller, acknowledged Nagelsmann’s decision, respecting his choice to take responsibility.
Germany’s performance at the World Cup did not meet the standards expected by the DFB. The team had topped Group E on goal difference, beating Ivory Coast and Curacao, but suffered a defeat to Ecuador before their elimination by Paraguay in Boston. This marked another early exit for the four-time champions, who had also failed to progress beyond the group stage in 2018 and 2022 under previous coaches.
During his tenure, Nagelsmann also led Germany to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 as hosts, where they were defeated by eventual winners Spain. His contract, which was initially set to run until after Euro 2024, had been extended to include this year’s World Cup and then to Euro 2028.
Klopp Emerges as Potential Successor
Following Nagelsmann’s resignation, the DFB has announced its intention to initiate discussions with Jurgen Klopp regarding the vacant head coach position. Klopp, who previously managed Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, and Liverpool, has reportedly signaled his general willingness to consider the role. He has been working as a pundit for German television during the World Cup.

Klopp concluded his management role at Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season and subsequently took on a position as head of global soccer for Red Bull. Reports suggest that his current contract with Red Bull includes a special exit clause that would allow him to take on the Germany job if approached. The DFB president, Bernd Neuendorf, praised Nagelsmann for his commitment and ambition, while also acknowledging the need for a new direction after the team’s recent performance.
The DFB leadership, including Neuendorf, Voller, and managing director Andreas Rettig, held discussions following the team’s elimination. They collectively agreed that Germany’s World Cup performance was below expectations and that a thorough review of the reasons behind the team’s struggles would be undertaken. The association believes that after such a significant setback, it is crucial to address the issues rather than proceeding as if nothing has occurred.
The German captain, Joshua Kimmich, stated that the team must also take responsibility for their early exit from the tournament. Nagelsmann’s tactical decisions, such as playing Kimmich as a right-back and recalling 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, were among the points of discussion during his time as coach.
Nagelsmann’s contract was reportedly cut short with a severance package. The DFB is now focused on finding a successor to lead the national team forward, with talks with Jurgen Klopp expected to commence.
