Liverpool news: New Diogo Jota memorial at Anfield unveiled

Liverpool has unveiled a permanent memorial outside Anfield in honour of Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, marking the first anniversary of their passing. The ‘Forever 20’ memorial serves as a lasting tribute to the brothers.

The memorial was crafted by sculptor Emma Rodgers and features a flowing heart sculpture, which references Jota’s goal celebration. From different perspectives, the sculpture also displays the numbers 20 and 30, representing the shirt numbers worn by the brothers. Additionally, the memorial includes lyrics from Jota’s song, a chant that has been sung during the 20th minute of every match since his death on 3 July 2025.

Physical tributes left at a temporary memorial over the past year have been integrated into the new structure. Sections of scarves and shirts have been set in wax and embedded into the sculpture’s surface and its stone plinth. The stone used for the plinth originates from Gondomar, the brothers’ hometown. A single flower, previously left as a tribute, has also been cast in bronze, and a PlayStation controller is featured, acknowledging Jota’s passion for gaming and his signature celebration.

A statement from Liverpool described ‘Forever 20’ as a permanent symbol of love, unity, and remembrance, providing a space for reflection and respect.

Portugal’s Emotional Tribute

The memorial’s unveiling follows a poignant tribute from the Portugal national team during their recent World Cup victory against Croatia. Following the dramatic 2-1 win in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32, captain Cristiano Ronaldo wore Jota’s No. 21 shirt. The entire squad then gathered, holding the shirt aloft in a collective act of remembrance.

Before the match, during the national anthem, Jota’s image was displayed on the big screen in Toronto, eliciting a strong cheer from the supporters present. Ronaldo was visibly emotional, shedding tears as he embraced teammates after the final whistle. He had also converted a second-half penalty that initiated Portugal’s comeback in the match.

The match itself saw Croatia take the lead in the 53rd minute through Ivan Perisic. Portugal equalised in the 68th minute when Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot after a VAR review. Substitute Goncalo Ramos secured the win in the fourth minute of stoppage time, heading in a cross from Rafael Leao. A late goal by Josko Gvardiol for Croatia was disallowed for offside after another VAR intervention, confirming Portugal’s progression to the next round.

Jota’s Legacy and Impact

Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident in Spain on 3 July 2025, just 11 days after Jota’s marriage to Rute Cardoso. Jota’s absence has been a significant factor for Portugal’s World Cup campaign, as he was considered one of the national team’s most reliable forwards. He had scored 14 goals in 49 appearances and was expected to play a prominent role in the tournament.

A month prior to his death, Jota celebrated Portugal’s UEFA Nations League triumph over Spain, expressing his gratitude to the country on social media. His career path, which included spells at Pacos de Ferreira, Porto, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Liverpool, made him a celebrated success story in Portugal, particularly as he did not come through the traditional academies of Benfica, Sporting, or Porto.

The victory against Croatia secured Portugal’s place in the Round of 16, setting up a match against Spain at Dallas Stadium on Monday. The night also served as a powerful moment of remembrance, with Ronaldo’s emotional tribute highlighting the team’s ongoing mourning for a teammate whose influence extended beyond the football pitch.
