Barbora Krejcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon women’s singles champion, secured a significant victory over French Open champion Mirra Andreeva in a three-set match. Krejcikova dedicated her win to her niece, who was at home with chickenpox. The Czech player overcame the fifth seed with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 in a match that lasted nearly three hours on Centre Court.

During the deciding set, Krejcikova faced a moment of tension, missing six match points while leading 5-3. However, she managed to regain her composure and close out the match in the subsequent game, as Andreeva showed visible frustration. Krejcikova expressed her hope that her performance on what she called “the best court in the world” would make her young niece proud, especially since her niece plays tennis and loves the sport.

The 30-year-old mentioned that her niece was ill with chickenpox, which her nephew had contracted from kindergarten. She hoped her brother allowed them to watch the match, and that her victory would provide motivation for her niece in tennis and in life. Krejcikova, currently ranked 38th in the world, has faced challenges with injuries and personal issues since her triumph at the All England Club two years prior. This season, she experienced first-round exits at both the Australian Open and Roland Garros.

Both players on Centre Court appeared momentarily confused when loud cheers erupted, which was later understood to be in response to England defeating DR Congo to advance to the World Cup last 16. Krejcikova reflected on her journey, stating that it felt special to achieve this win after overcoming injuries and personal difficulties in recent months, describing it as a challenging emotional period.

In contrast to Krejcikova’s celebration, 19-year-old Andreeva reacted to her defeat by throwing her racquet and exclaiming “I quit” towards her team before quickly leaving the court. The Russian teenager, who had shown signs of frustration throughout the match, became emotional during a post-match news conference when asked about her performance. She indicated that she would need a few days to recover from the loss before returning to practice for hard courts.

Osaka’s Fashion Statement and On-Court Success

Naomi Osaka once again captured attention at Wimbledon with her distinctive fashion choices. Following her initial appearance in an all-white, full-length kimono to adhere to the tournament’s strict dress code, Osaka decided to “mix it up a little bit” for her subsequent match. For her return to action on Wednesday, the 28-year-old sported a white jacket with a floral pattern, complemented by a long train attached to her waist with an obi, a traditional decorative belt.

Her walk from the locker room to number two court drew the gaze of spectators and photographers. Shortly after, Osaka achieved her best Wimbledon performance by defeating Russian Anastasia Gasanova 6-3, 6-2, securing her spot in the third round. The former world number one, who was born in Japan to a Haitian father and Japanese mother and grew up primarily in Florida, shared that her inspiration can come from various sources.

Osaka recalled a trip to Japan, specifically mentioning the Harajuku district in Tokyo, known for its vibrant fashion culture, where people express themselves through clothing. This experience, she noted, was cool and colourful and significantly influenced her approach to fashion experimentation. She stated that she doesn’t typically have a fixed plan for her outfits, believing it is acceptable to try new things, even if they don’t always succeed.

Osaka is set to face Russian-born Australian Daria Kasatkina in the third round. A potential fourth-round opponent for her could be world number one Aryna Sabalenka. Sabalenka herself advanced to the third round after a 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) victory over McCartney Kessler. After her match, Sabalenka paused to take a photo with a young fan on Court One who had a replica of the Belarusian’s tiger tattoo on her left arm. Sabalenka has previously stated that her tattoo symbolises her aggressive approach to playing tennis.

Sabalenka described the interaction as “adorable,” noting the fan’s matching tattoo. She found it inspiring to see young children emulating and supporting her. Sabalenka’s next match will be an anticipated third-round encounter against former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. Ostapenko advanced by defeating Antonia Ruzic of Croatia with a score of 6-2, 6-0.

Djokovic’s Dominant Performance

In other matches, Novak Djokovic delivered a strong performance, securing a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. Djokovic expressed his satisfaction with his play, particularly highlighting a game where he felt he executed one of his best return games recently. He noted that he played with more relaxation and less tension, especially after Tsitsipas served well for about a set and a half before Djokovic began to anticipate his serves more effectively.

Djokovic also mentioned enjoying another indoor Wimbledon match and expressed his anticipation for playing outdoors in the next round. During a change of ends, Djokovic engaged in a light-hearted moment with a ball girl, asking her to cut a tag from his top and jokingly pretending she had cut him. He later apologised if he had startled her, but noted that such gags are easier when leading in the match.

Feeling good physically, Djokovic reiterated that Wimbledon is his childhood dream tournament and that he feels privileged to compete at his age. He dismissed the idea that his sentiment about age being just a number is a cliché, asserting its truth. He also acknowledged golfers Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, and Luke Donald, who were present in the Royal Box, congratulating them on their Ryder Cup win and specifically McIlroy on his green jacket, playfully suggesting a trade.

Djokovic’s performance was described as close to perfect, showcasing his mastery of tennis. He will next face Rinderknech. Tsitsipas, who was once considered a successor to the top players, has seen his ranking drop to 87. Despite his powerful forehand, it was not enough to challenge Djokovic effectively. Tsitsipas has also contended with injuries and coaching changes, which have impacted his performance.

Djokovic’s ability to break Tsitsipas’s serve, even when it seemed unlikely, demonstrated his impact on opponents. He secured a 6-3, 6-4 lead, serving out the second set to love. The match saw Djokovic holding his serve consistently, while Tsitsipas struggled to maintain his level as the set progressed. Djokovic’s dominant play included hoisting lobs, executing drop shots, and directing winners across the court, ultimately securing a commanding lead.

The final score for Djokovic’s victory over Tsitsipas was 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
