Norway edge Ivory Coast 2–1 to enter World Cup Round of 16

Norway secured their place in the World Cup Round of 16 by defeating Ivory Coast 2-1 in a match held at Dallas Stadium. The decisive goal came in the 86th minute from Erling Haaland, marking his fifth goal of the tournament and ultimately ending Ivory Coast’s hopes in the competition.

The match saw Antonio Nusa open the scoring for Norway in the 39th minute. However, Amad Diallo equalised for Ivory Coast, setting the stage for Haaland’s late winner. This victory means Norway will now face Brazil in a highly anticipated clash scheduled for Sunday in New York.

First Half Action and Norwegian Breakthrough

In the initial stages of the game, Ivory Coast showed strong attacking intent. Nicolas Pepe posed a threat on the right flank, while Ghislain Konan came close to giving his team the lead, driving into the penalty area before sending a shot into the side-netting. Yan Diomande also delivered a searching pass to Pepe, whose mis-hit shot was cleared by the Norwegian defence.

Haaland was relatively quiet during these early exchanges. However, as the first half neared its conclusion, Norway began to assert control. A downward header from Haaland, following a cross from Alexander Sorloth, signaled a shift in momentum for Stale Solbakken’s side. Norway increased their tempo and dominated possession, which eventually led to their opening goal.

The growing superiority of Norway paid off when Martin Odegaard distributed the ball to Nusa on the left. Nusa then cut onto his right foot and delivered a precise finish that curled past the diving Yahia Fofana and into the top corner of the net. Haaland was denied a goal shortly after by a last-ditch block, and Sorloth’s header from the subsequent corner went across the face of the goal.

Towards the end of the first half, Emmanuel Agbadou nodded wide for Ivory Coast. Ten minutes after the restart, Pepe’s effort was saved by Orjan Nyland, after Torbjorn Heggem had blocked an initial shot from Guela Doue.

Ivory Coast’s Equaliser and Haaland’s Decisive Goal

The second half saw Ivory Coast introduce Amad Diallo as a substitute for Christ Inao Oulai around the hour mark. Diallo quickly made an impact, clearing Heggem’s goal-bound effort off the line. Soon after, he brought his team level. The Manchester United winger executed a quick one-two with Pepe, then evaded David Moller Wolfe and Sander Berge before striking a shot that bounced beyond Nyland, leading to widespread celebrations from the Ivory Coast team.

Despite Ivory Coast’s resurgence, it was Haaland who ultimately secured the victory for Norway. Substitute Oscar Bobb, a former clubmate of Haaland’s, played the ball into the path of Patrick Berg inside the penalty area. Berg then set up Haaland, who scored into an open net with Fofana out of position. This simple tap-in in the 86th minute broke the hearts of the Ivorian players and fans.

In stoppage time, Nyland was called into action again, acrobatically tipping away Amad’s free kick to preserve Norway’s narrow lead. This crucial save ensured Norway maintained their advantage and progressed to the next stage of the tournament. The Norwegian players celebrated by sitting down before their supporters and performing a rowing motion together, symbolising their collective effort and triumph.

The match was characterized by Norway’s resilience, as they defended without panic and refused to let Ivory Coast’s physicality dictate the outcome. Ivory Coast had started the game with energy, but Norway’s ability to withstand pressure and capitalize on key moments proved decisive. The victory sets up a compelling encounter for Norway against Brazil in New York.
