Rogers arrives at Stamford Bridge
Chelsea has confirmed the signing of England international Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa. The forward has signed a contract at Stamford Bridge and is set to join Xabi Alonso‘s squad for the upcoming 2026/27 season. Rogers expressed his excitement about the move, stating that Chelsea is the largest club in London and one he has admired since childhood. He also highlighted his enthusiasm for the project under the new manager and the direction the club is taking.
Rogers arrives at Chelsea having established himself as a prominent young attacking talent in the Premier League. During his tenure at Aston Villa, his contributions included goals and assists that played a part in 40 goals across 85 Premier League appearances. He also helped guide the Midlands club to a top-four finish and the UEFA Europa League trophy last season.

Reports indicate that the transfer fee for Rogers is a club record for Chelsea and is considered a high-value deal of the 2026 summer transfer window so far. Rogers was represented by his agents Footwork in the deal.
Impact and future role
Rogers has been with the England national team at the World Cup, which took place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. There had been an expectation that Aston Villa would allow Rogers to depart this summer, provided a significant fee was offered. While Arsenal was also reportedly interested, Rogers was reportedly impressed by the new manager Xabi Alonso and Chelsea’s overall project, leading him to choose the west London club.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024. He made 125 appearances for the Midlands club, scoring 14 goals and providing 12 assists in 55 games across all competitions last season. His performance helped Unai Emery’s side qualify for the Champions League and secure the Europa League title.

Analysis suggests that Rogers has flourished in recent campaigns for Aston Villa, consistently proving to be one of their most threatening attacking players. He accumulated 28 goals and 24 assists over the last two seasons. His playing style is characterized by powerful dribbling and the ability to score from distance, with five goals from outside the box since his Premier League debut.
The integration of Rogers into Chelsea’s squad under Xabi Alonso is a key point of discussion. Alonso, during his time at Bayer Leverkusen, often favored a 3-4-2-1 attacking system. This formation utilized wing-backs for width and two No 10s to occupy half-spaces and support a lone striker. This tactical approach could provide insight into Alonso’s plans for Rogers.
In Alonso’s previous system, a player like Jonas Hoffman would often drift wide to link up with an overlapping wing-back, comfortable in carrying the ball forward in wide areas. This role could suit Rogers, who might develop a partnership with fellow new signing Marco Palestra, known for his adventurous off-ball running and wing-back play. This setup could also allow Cole Palmer more freedom in a central attacking role on the opposite side.
Alonso has demonstrated tactical flexibility throughout his coaching career, adapting formations during his tenure at Real Madrid. The acquisition of Rogers, along with Palestra, suggests a potential move towards recreating a winning formula and a return to an expansive back-three system. Rogers becomes the fourth summer signing for Chelsea, following the arrivals of defender Marco Palestra, striker Emmanuel Emegha, and winger Geovany Quenda.
