This comes as FIFA has initiated an official investigation into the events that occurred after Spain secured their second World Cup title against Argentina.

The final match was marred by confrontations immediately after the whistle. Paredes was observed in television footage grabbing Spain defender Eric Garcia and pushing him to the ground. When Gavi attempted to intervene, Paredes was seen pushing the player to the turf and grappling with him.

Other Argentina players were also involved in the altercation. Defender Nahuel Molina appeared to swing a punch towards Spain captain Rodri, who then confronted Molina. Veteran defender Nicolas Otamendi was also seen in a heated verbal exchange with Rodri as tensions escalated. The governing body stated that following an assessment of relevant match reports, the FIFA Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code regarding the post-match incidents. While no timeline was provided for the investigation, the appointment of a prosecutor suggests the possibility of retrospective sanctions if code breaches are established.

Earlier reports indicated that Paredes had received a red card after the match, but this dismissal was not officially recorded, meaning he did not face immediate punishment on the night despite the controversy.

Paredes’ statement and team conduct

In his first public comments since the final, Paredes reflected on his team’s campaign and expressed gratitude to supporters. He wrote on Instagram, “Thank you, Argentina! I love you today and always. Today, I write with a heavy heart, having been unable to bring our country the joy it so richly deserves. But with a chest full of pride for having given everything we had and for flying our flag at the very top once again!”

He also praised his teammates, stating, “Thank you to everyone who was part of this national team. To this group of players who gave their all to represent this jersey, fighting for it until the very last second of every match! It was an honour to be part of the best Argentine national team in history.” However, his post did not acknowledge the post-match confrontation that has drawn significant attention.

The controversy extended beyond the physical altercations. Argentina players faced criticism for turning their backs on their own supporters as Spain collected the World Cup trophy. This action was widely interpreted as disrespectful towards the newly crowned champions.

Dani Olmo, a midfielder for Spain, commented on Argentina‘s conduct during the trophy ceremony. He stated, “It doesn’t matter to us. What matters are the values you want to convey.” Olmo emphasized the responsibility of elite athletes, adding, “We are an example for many generations, for many boys and girls, and I think they should also be an example for everyone, and for the better. We’re just going to enjoy this now.”
