Martinez reflects on international future
Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez is contemplating his future in international football following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final. The 33-year-old, known as “Dibu,” has indicated that he is reflecting on whether it is “time to step aside” from representing his country.
Martinez’s comments came in an emotional Instagram post after the match, where he expressed deep disappointment. He wrote, “I dreamt we’d win it again, I dreamt of bringing it back to Argentina and making history once more.” He added, “The truth is, the pain is hard to explain. There are many things to reflect on and how to move forward, and if it’s time to step aside. I’m so sorry, I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates.”
This message has led to speculation that one of Argentina’s prominent players could be considering retirement from international duties. Martinez has earned 67 caps for Argentina throughout his career.
A career marked by significant achievements
Martinez was a key figure in Argentina’s 2022 World Cup victory, where he also received the Golden Glove award as the tournament’s best goalkeeper. His performances have consistently placed him among the top goalkeepers globally, a fact reinforced by him winning the Yashin Trophy, an award for the world’s best goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or ceremonies, in both 2023 and 2024.
During the recent World Cup campaign, Martinez played every minute of Argentina’s eight matches. He managed to keep two clean sheets and conceded eight goals over the course of the tournament. His consistent presence and crucial saves have been a hallmark of his international career.
The final against Spain saw Martinez deliver a notable performance, making 11 saves, which is reported to be the most by a goalkeeper in a World Cup final. Despite playing with a broken finger, an injury he has been carrying since May after delaying surgery to represent Argentina, he repeatedly frustrated Spain’s attackers, including Nico Williams, Rodrigo De Paul, and Lamine Yamal.
The final match and its aftermath
Spain’s manager, Luis de la Fuente, acknowledged Martinez’s exceptional display in the final. De la Fuente commented, “We should have put the game to bed much earlier. We had many chances. But Dibu was nothing short of exceptional. It was thanks to Dibu’s saves, and this goes to show that winning is very difficult.”
Despite Martinez’s efforts, Spain eventually broke through in the 106th minute when Ferran Torres scored the winning goal. This came after Argentina was reduced to 10 men following Enzo Fernandez’s second yellow card late in normal time. The defeat ended Argentina’s ambition to become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend the World Cup title.
Martinez has been with Aston Villa since 2020 and has a contract with the club until 2029. However, there have been reports linking him with a potential move to Italian side Juventus this summer.
His post-match apology underscored the pain of falling short of defending the title, stating, “I truly tried my best to help my country and my team-mates.”
The World Cup final defeat to Spain was a 1-0 result.
