The inauguration of the Missing Link project promises to significantly reduce travel time and distance on one of India’s busiest expressways. Set to officially open on May 1, 2026, this project aims to address the chronic traffic congestion that has plagued the Mumbai-Pune route for years.
Before this development, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway was already a marvel, operational since 2002. Yet, it faced severe challenges in the Borghat section. Sharp turns and steep gradients often resulted in delays—sometimes stretching up to two hours during peak times. On average, drivers experienced a delay of around 30 minutes daily. Not only was this frustrating, but it also led to significant fuel wastage worth ₹1 crore each day.
The Missing Link project spans an impressive 13.3 km and will cut the distance between Mumbai and Pune by approximately 6 km. This reduction translates into a travel time savings of about 20 to 30 minutes. Initially, the route will be open only to light vehicles; buses will follow in a subsequent phase while heavy vehicles will continue using the existing route.
As part of its ambitious design, the project includes what is touted as the world’s widest underground tunnel—measuring a staggering 22.33 meters. This engineering feat highlights India’s growing capabilities in infrastructure development.
Why does this matter? For commuters, it means less time stuck in traffic and more efficient journeys. For businesses along the route, it could mean increased patronage as access improves. And for Maharashtra as a whole, it represents progress—especially fitting as it coincides with Maharashtra Day celebrations.
However, not everyone is convinced that this project will solve all problems. Concerns linger about whether it will truly alleviate congestion or simply shift traffic patterns elsewhere. Officials have not provided detailed projections on long-term impacts.
