'We were talking at nets about...': Shubman Gill opens up on 2027 World Cup planning with Virat Kohli

Planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup

India captain Shubman Gill has confirmed that planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia is already underway. Discussions have taken place between Gill and Virat Kohli regarding the ideal squad composition and combinations for the conditions expected in South Africa. These conversations at the nets focused on identifying players, including those not currently in the team, who could contribute in the future, specifically addressing bowlers, all-rounders, and spinners.

Gill, who assumed captaincy duties in the One-day International (ODI) format late last year, emphasised that every upcoming series will be crucial for working out combinations and preparing for the conditions in South Africa. He stated that the mindset is to find a combination that performs well on wickets similar to those anticipated in South Africa, making the current series against England particularly important.

The India team is embarking on this journey towards the 2027 ODI World Cup following a period of varied performances in white-ball cricket. This includes a 2-0 loss in Ireland and a 4-0 defeat in the Twenty20 International (T20I) series against England.

Importance of the 50-over format

Gill expressed his strong belief in the importance of the 50-over format, advocating for its continuation without changes. He dismissed suggestions of reducing the format to 40 overs, highlighting that the 50-over World Cup remains the pinnacle of ODI cricket. He noted that he grew up watching 50-over cricket, and it holds a significant place in his childhood memories, making it the most prestigious World Cup to win.

Instead of altering the format, Gill suggested that reintroducing multi-nation tournaments, such as triangular or quadrangular series, could make bilateral cricket more engaging for both players and fans. He recalled the enjoyment of watching triangular series involving teams like India, Australia, and Sri Lanka, proposing that playing against two different teams at various venues would add interest.

The captain also welcomed the return of Jasprit Bumrah to the ODI squad. Bumrah is rejoining the team after being rested to manage his workload following the Indian Premier League 2026. Gill expressed hope that Bumrah would perform well in the upcoming series and contribute to the team’s success.

Squad dynamics and upcoming challenges

The road to the 2027 ODI World Cup is not without its challenges for India, particularly concerning injuries to all-rounders. Players like Hardik Pandya are not currently with the team, and Nitish K Reddy and Harshit Rana have faced injury setbacks. Additionally, the form of Kuldeep Yadav is being monitored.

Discussions about the future of experienced players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the team have also been part of the conversation. Gill confirmed that he had a detailed discussion with Kohli about team combinations. He also reiterated that both Kohli and Sharma remain integral to India‘s batting line-up, with their experience and skill being highly valuable to the team.

While the top five batting positions, including Rohit, Gill, Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul, appear settled, the all-rounder slots and player fitness remain areas of concern. The team has 12 ODIs scheduled until next April, including series against England and New Zealand away, and against Sri Lanka and the West Indies in India, to finalise their main squad and backup options.

Gill noted the difference between playing three-match series and the 11 matches in a World Cup. He mentioned that injuries to players like Reddy and Rana were unfortunate, as the team wanted to give them more matches before the World Cup to help them feel settled. The upcoming 14 months will be crucial for Gill to establish his leadership within the Indian men’s team.

The India captain also extended congratulations to the Indian women’s team for their 270-run victory over England in the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s.

The team is looking to gain momentum in the ODI format, which is not played as frequently as it once was, as they begin their three-match ODI series against England at Edgbaston.
