Spain’s Yamal eyes World Cup final spot as ideal birthday gift

Spain’s Lamine Yamal, 19, eyes a World Cup final spot as the perfect birthday gift, downplaying fear ahead of the semi-final clash against France.

Best birthday present for Yamal? World Cup semifinal win over France

Lamine Yamal, the Barcelona prodigy, recently celebrated his 19th birthday and expressed his desire for a World Cup semifinal victory over France as the ultimate present. The young player spoke to reporters on Monday, downplaying any fear ahead of the highly anticipated match.

Yamal addressed previous comments where he suggested France, rather than Spain, should be apprehensive, given La Roja’s recent successes against them. He clarified his stance, stating, “I was asked if I was afraid of France, and I said no. We are European champions. It’s simply football.”

While discussing his birthday, Yamal mentioned purchasing a new jewel-encrusted necklace, but emphasized that a win on Tuesday and a subsequent trip to New York for the final would be the most significant gift. Despite other players showcasing strong goal-scoring form in the tournament, Yamal has scored once so far. He remains focused on the team’s performance, saying, “I don’t focus on goals, but it’s always special to score in a match like this. I accept the challenge. That’s why I came here.” He anticipates a “beautiful match for the spectators,” describing it as “the game everyone was waiting for.”

Yamal maintained a calm demeanor regarding the pressure of the upcoming game. He remarked, “There are far more difficult situations in life than a football match, so I’m calm. I don’t feel any extra pressure; I’ll go out and play like always and give my all for the team.”

Spain’s Strategic Approach

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, outlined his team’s strategy to adopt an attacking approach against France in the semifinal. The match, set to take place at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on Tuesday, is expected to be a clash of contrasting styles, with Spain aiming to impose their possession-based game.

Despite France being widely considered favorites by betting markets to secure a second title in three attempts, De la Fuente remains confident. His team has previously defeated France in their last two encounters. He noted, “We’ve already analysed France in great detail; we’ve known each other for a while now.”

De la Fuente acknowledged the strength of France’s squad, which includes talents like Kylian Mbappe, Michael Olise, and Ousmane Dembele. However, he stressed the importance of his team’s own strengths, stating, “We have to put all of our virtues on the table and try to counteract the strengths of the opponent. And that’s what football is about – the team that strikes a better balance is usually closer to getting the victory.”

The coach also reflected on a previous encounter where Spain defeated France 5-4 in a UEFA Nations League semifinal. He believes the upcoming match will be different, as France’s squad has matured. “I think they are a better team, far better, because those players have grown, and what they are doing now is better than what they were doing then,” he explained, noting their improved skills over the past two years.

De la Fuente plans to instruct his players to enjoy the challenge, emphasizing the unique setting of the semifinal. His final message to the team will be, “Let’s get out there and enjoy it. We are in a unique setting. Who knows whether we will come back? We must be the team that we know that we can be. We must be strong and try to counter the strength of the opponent.”

France’s Perspective on the Match

France midfielder Adrien Rabiot stated that his team does not have a specific “anti-Lamine Yamal plan” for the upcoming World Cup 2026 semifinal against Spain. The match in Dallas will determine a spot in Sunday’s final.

Rabiot clarified that France’s focus is on the entire Spanish team, not just one player. He told reporters, “There is no anti-Lamine Yamal plan. We are focused on the Spanish team, not on a single player.” He acknowledged Spain’s overall threat, including their attacking players, ball possession, ability to find space near the box, and combination play.

The French player also addressed past comments he made about Yamal, where he suggested the Barcelona star needed to “do more” before a Euro 2024 semifinal. When questioned, Rabiot admitted he did not remember the exact statements but stood by his past thoughts. He reiterated, “This is still a football match, and we’re not afraid of anyone.”

Rabiot expressed confidence in France’s preparation for the semifinal, believing they are in the best possible condition. He concluded, “Everything is in our favor. Honestly, I think it would have been very difficult to be better prepared. The pitch will decide, because this is still football.” The winner of the semifinal will face either Argentina or England in the final.
