Monty Desai has been appointed as the new head coach of Cricket Canada, a move aimed at revitalizing the national team amidst ongoing national security concerns.
Desai brings with him 20 years of international coaching experience. His appointment comes at a time when the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) has identified threats from Khalistani elements in its 2025 report. This report marks the 40th anniversary of the tragic Air India Flight 182 bombing, which killed 329 people, predominantly Canadians.
Arvinder Khosa, the president of Cricket Canada, stated, “Our foremost priority is to restore Cricket Canada’s prominence through performance, professionalism, and a renewed and vitalized sense of purpose.” The focus on revitalization is critical as the organization seeks to regain its footing in international cricket.
In parallel, national security remains a pressing issue. The CSIS report highlights that ongoing involvement in violent extremist activities by Khalistani groups continues to pose a threat to Canadian interests. Notably, no CBKE-related attacks occurred in Canada in 2025, according to the same report.
Beyond cricket, Canada faces challenges with its energy infrastructure. Approximately 280 remote communities are not connected to the main North American grid and rely on diesel-based microgrids. Major projects often need to build their own energy infrastructure, which drives up costs and extends project timelines.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has emphasized collaboration across sectors—energy, critical minerals, investment, defense, and AI—to create more opportunities for Canadians. He stated, “By working closely together in energy, critical minerals, investment, defence, and AI to move faster in these endeavours, we will create more opportunities for our people.”
