Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed that Malaysia will host the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in October 2026. The event, which will take place at the Sepang International Circuit from October 2-4, 2026, is positioned between the Azerbaijan and Singapore Grands Prix on the calendar. This arrangement ensures that the 2026 season will feature 23 races, with the rest of the schedule remaining unchanged.
The decision to move the Bahrain Grand Prix to Malaysia comes after the original April races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia were postponed due to ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This move allows Formula 1 to maintain a full race calendar, preventing potential contractual complications related to broadcaster rights fees and team sponsorship budgets.
Sepang’s Return to the F1 Calendar
The Sepang International Circuit, located near Kuala Lumpur, is a familiar venue for Formula 1 fans, having made its debut on the calendar in 1999. It last hosted a Formula 1 race in 2017. The circuit is recognised for its challenging layout, passionate fanbase, and often unpredictable weather conditions, which have historically contributed to exciting races.

The agreement to host the race in Malaysia was a collaborative effort involving Formula 1, the FIA, the Government of Bahrain, and the Government of Malaysia. This partnership was crucial in ensuring the continuation of the Bahrain Grand Prix, which might otherwise have been cancelled.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem commended the collaboration that made Malaysia‘s hosting of the Bahrain Grand Prix possible. He emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of teams, volunteers, officials, and fans remained a top priority throughout the process. Ben Sulayem also noted Malaysia‘s historical significance in Formula 1 and the strong relationship with the Motorsports Association of Malaysia and the Malaysian Government.
His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain, stated that the event builds on the close and brotherly relations between Bahrain and Malaysia. He affirmed Bahrain‘s commitment to the sport and its role as a pillar of stability for Formula 1 amidst regional challenges.
Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed his appreciation for the trust placed in Malaysia. He highlighted that this collaboration is more than just a world-class sporting event; it reflects the enduring friendship and partnership between the two nations. Ibrahim also expressed Malaysia‘s readiness to welcome Formula 1, the FIA, teams, and fans, showcasing the country’s infrastructure, operational excellence, and hospitality.
While the addition of Malaysia brings the 2026 schedule to 23 races, there is still uncertainty surrounding the final two rounds of the season in Qatar and Abu Dhabi due to ongoing regional conflict. Formula 1 is reportedly considering alternative venues, such as Imola in Italy, and potentially Portimao in Portugal or Istanbul Park in Turkey, should further changes to the calendar be necessary. The final approval for the Malaysian Grand Prix is subject to the World Motor Sport Council, which is largely considered a formality.
