This match will represent the highest-ranked opposition India has faced since the FIFA World Ranking system was introduced in 1992, with Brazil currently holding the fifth position globally.
The announcement confirms earlier speculation, with the Indian football team’s official social media channels sharing the development. A post on X, formerly Twitter, highlighted the date of October 3 as a “date for the history books.”
Planning and Logistics for the Friendly
Discussions between the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) and Indian organisers for this friendly match began during the recently concluded World Cup in the United States. ESPN Brasil was among the first to report on Brazil‘s interest in adding India to its October FIFA international window schedule, with Kolkata emerging as the preferred venue weeks after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Brazil‘s itinerary for the October window already includes a tour of Australia, where they are scheduled to play against the Socceroos on September 25 in Townsville and on September 29 in Brisbane. Following these matches, the team will travel to Kolkata for the encounter with the Blue Tigers.
These fixtures are part of FIFA‘s new “Super FIFA Window”, an extended international period that can last up to 16 days. This window allows national teams to participate in as many as four matches, encompassing both competitive games and friendlies. ESPN Brasil also indicated that the CBF plans to organise additional home friendlies in the upcoming year, particularly in cities that do not typically feature on Brazil‘s international calendar.
The selection of Kolkata as the host city is understood to be partly due to the substantial support Brazil received there during the World Cup. The city’s display of posters, murals, and fan gatherings underscored the enduring popularity of the Seleção in this traditional stronghold of Indian football.

Mr M Satyanarayan, AIFF Deputy Secretary General, expressed the significance of the event, stating that welcoming a team of Brazil‘s calibre to India is an extraordinary moment that will become a landmark chapter in the history of Indian football.
Subrata Paul, Director, National Teams, highlighted the opportunity this match presents for the national team players. He noted that it is a rare chance for them to compete against one of the greatest footballing nations, providing an experience that challenges growth, inspires bigger dreams, and creates lasting memories for their careers.
However, organising this fixture is anticipated to present considerable logistical challenges. This match will occur less than a year after issues arose during Lionel Messi‘s visit to the Yuva Bharati Krirangan, where large crowds led to concerns regarding crowd management and security for major football events in India.
