England Secures Victory in Cardiff
England secured a four-wicket victory over India in the second one-day international in Cardiff, levelling the series. This win was largely attributed to a crucial innings of 99 not out from Joe Root, who guided his team to chase down a target of 234 with 5.5 overs remaining. The match saw England overcome a challenging start to their innings, demonstrating resilience in difficult conditions.
The chase began turbulently for England, with Ben Duckett dismissed on the first ball. Further early wickets, including Jacob Bethell for four and captain Harry Brook for 16, put pressure on the hosts. Root, however, remained steadfast, building partnerships and anchoring the innings despite the fall of wickets around him.
Root’s Masterclass Amidst Wickets
Root’s performance was described as a masterclass in adapting to tricky conditions. He was tasked with rebuilding the innings after the chaotic start, and despite the departures of key players like Sam Curran and Jos Buttler, he found support from Will Jacks and Gus Atkinson. Root’s 76-ball fifty was notably his third-slowest in one-day international cricket, reflecting the challenging pitch and consistent bowling from India.
His disciplined approach contrasted with some of his teammates, particularly Harry Brook’s more aggressive style. Root remained unperturbed even when Jacks was caught for 30 with 37 runs still needed. Ultimately, Atkinson hit the winning boundary when only three runs were required, leaving Root stranded on 99 not out, just shy of a century.

India’s Innings and England’s Bowling Response
Earlier in the match, India, after choosing to bowl first, posted a total of 233 runs in 44 overs. Virat Kohli showed promising form, scoring 65 runs and helping guide India to 178-3 in the 32nd over. However, his dismissal, caught off Jofra Archer, sparked a collapse for the visitors.
England’s bowlers then took control, claiming the last seven wickets for just 55 runs. Jofra Archer finished with figures of 3-47, including the key wickets of Axar Patel and Shivam Dube. Saqib Mahmood removed Washington Sundar, and Gus Atkinson contributed significantly with two wickets in three balls, ending with 3-50, while Mahmood secured 2-52.
Shreyas Iyer attempted a late rally for India with 66 runs, but Atkinson’s bowling curtailed their innings. The match highlighted the ability of both teams’ premier batsmen to master the conditions, but it was England’s collective effort that ultimately prevailed.
Looking Ahead to the Series Decider
Following this victory, the series is now level at one-one, setting up a decisive third match. The series decider is scheduled to take place at Lord’s on Sunday. This follows England’s previous dominance in the preceding T20 series, which they won 4-0.
Harry Brook expressed satisfaction with the win, commending Root’s consistent performance and his ability to rotate the strike effectively in 50-over cricket. Root himself indicated that winning the series was the priority over personal milestones, acknowledging the challenging conditions throughout the game. Shubman Gill of India also praised Root, referring to him as “the master of those kind of totals.”
According to reports, Joe Root, at 35, has been in exceptional form in one-day internationals over the past year, averaging 78. His last three innings include scores of 111 not out, 76 not out, and 99 not out. The upcoming match at Lord’s will determine the winner of the series.
