Ireland prepares for India series
The Ireland men’s team is preparing for a two-match T20I series against India, the reigning World T20 champions, beginning on Friday. This series marks a significant test for Ireland as they embark on a new era in T20 cricket under new captain Lorcan Tucker. All-rounder George Dockrell expressed his excitement about the upcoming challenge, viewing it as an opportunity for the team to assess its current standing and develop new strategies.
Dockrell highlighted the importance of playing against top-tier teams like India, stating that such assignments provide valuable feedback on the team’s performance and areas requiring improvement. He emphasised the team’s desire to be put under pressure, believing these matches will offer crucial insights as they aim for victories.
The series is particularly special for Ireland, as they will be hosting India on home soil. Dockrell noted the presence of new faces in the squad and a developing team identity, indicating a fresh start for the Irish side. He is keen to observe how this new chapter in Ireland’s T20 journey unfolds.
New leadership and team dynamics
Lorcan Tucker has taken over the captaincy from veteran Paul Stirling, signifying a shift in leadership for the Ireland team. Dockrell voiced his support for Tucker, commending his performance since assuming the role. He described Tucker as clear, calm, and a thoughtful leader, suggesting a positive impact on the team’s dynamics.
The Irish squad will be without several key players, including Josh Little, Mark Adair, Paul Stirling, and Curtis Campher, due to injuries. Despite these absences, the team features capable T20 players such as George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Harry Tector, and Jai Moondra, who will be playing in familiar home conditions.
The series against India is seen as an early test in the team’s new cycle, offering a chance to implement new plans and approaches. The opportunity to compete against one of the best teams in the world is a significant event for the Irish cricketers.
India’s selection dilemmas
For India, the series presents its own set of challenges, particularly regarding team selection. Under new captain Shreyas Iyer, the team management faces a dilemma concerning the inclusion of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a 15-year-old sensation. Sooryavanshi’s impressive performances in the IPL and a notable 29-ball 94 for India A against Sri Lanka A have generated considerable interest in his potential international debut.
However, incorporating Sooryavanshi, an opener, into the starting eleven would require adjusting the established top three of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. These three players were instrumental in India’s ICC T20 World Cup final victory over New Zealand in March, with all three scoring fifties in that match. Their recent T20 records are strong, making it difficult to alter the winning combination.
One option considered is moving Sanju Samson to the middle order, where he has previously batted at No. 4 and No. 5. However, these positions are likely to be occupied by captain Shreyas Iyer and vice-captain Tilak Varma, leaving No. 6 as the only potential opening. This slot traditionally goes to an all-rounder, with options like Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel, and newcomer Suryansh Shedge available.
Placing Samson at No. 6 would mean India would field only five bowlers, which could be a concern given the absence of key bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, and Varun Chakravarthy. Samson’s strike rate at the pole position is 181.93 from 28 innings, with three hundreds and four fifties, while his strike rates at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 are lower. Abhishek Sharma, currently the No.1 T20I batter, has also been highly effective as an opener, scoring 1414 runs from 43 innings with two hundreds and 10 fifties, at a strike rate of 192.38.
All three, Abhishek (563), Kishan (602), and Samson (477), had strong outings in IPL 2026. Additionally, Kishan recently scored 125 against Afghanistan in an ODI. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and Captain Shreyas Iyer face a significant decision on whether to debut Sooryavanshi or maintain the current successful lineup. The presence of Sooryavanshi, however, is expected to increase pressure on Samson and Abhishek to perform consistently.
On the bowling front, India will feature a second-string lineup, providing an opportunity for players like Harshit Rana, Prasidh Krishna, and Prince Yadav to prove their capabilities. Harshit Rana has returned from injury, while Prasidh Krishna recently took a career-best fifer in an ODI against Afghanistan. The first T20I match is scheduled to start at 6pm IST on Friday.
