Heavy rain is forecasted in Coimbatore and surrounding districts over the next week, offering a welcome respite from the sweltering summer heat in Tamil Nadu. The Chennai Meteorological Centre has issued a warning for heavy rainfall across eight districts, including Madurai and Erode.

Predictions indicate that rainfall will be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 km/h. This shift in weather patterns is attributed to a trough extending from western Rajasthan to the Kumari Sea.

Specifically, light to moderate rain is expected on May 2, followed by heavier downpours on May 3 in hill areas of Coimbatore and Tiruppur. As temperatures soar to around 39-40°C during this period, this unexpected rain could bring much-needed relief.

Forecast details:

  • May 2: Light to moderate rain across various areas
  • May 3: Heavy rain anticipated in hill regions
  • May 4: Light to moderate rain expected again
  • May 5: Heavy rain forecasted in Coimbatore and Tiruppur
  • May 6: Continued heavy rain predicted
  • May 7: Light to moderate rainfall expected
  • May 8: Heavy rain projected once more

The maximum temperature during this period will hover around the high end of the scale—39-40°C—while minimums are expected between 29-30°C. This unusual summer rainfall pattern is not typical for Tamil Nadu, which generally experiences dry and hot conditions during these months.
