'Rohit Sharma will continue to represent India; Lord's ODI won't be his last match': BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia dismisses retirement rumours

Rohit Sharma’s Future in ODIs

Devajit Saikia, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has dismissed recent speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. Saikia confirmed on Saturday that the final ODI against England at Lord’s on Sunday will not be Sharma’s last match for India. He reiterated that Sharma remains an integral part of India’s ODI plans.

The clarification from the BCCI comes amidst discussions about Sharma’s future, particularly concerning his automatic selection beyond the current series against England. Selectors are reportedly evaluating every ODI player in preparation for the 2027 World Cup. Saikia, however, stated that no definitive decision has been made regarding Sharma’s long-term future.

Saikia emphasized, as quoted by PTI, that there have been no discussions indicating that Sharma’s match at Lord’s would be his last. He affirmed that Sharma is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is considered for selection.

Team Dynamics and Selection Challenges

Reports have indicated that Sharma’s place in India’s ODI XI is no longer guaranteed, with selectors focusing on form and fitness as preparations intensify for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The assessment suggests that Sharma could continue to play if his performances justify his inclusion.

Sharma is currently 13 matches away from achieving the milestone of 300 appearances in ODI history, a feat accomplished by only seven other players. The ongoing situation highlights a period of transition and strategic planning within the Indian cricket team.

Tensions have reportedly been escalating between Rohit Sharma, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and head coach Gautam Gambhir, stemming from differing views on the team’s future direction. This dynamic could potentially influence the squad composition for upcoming tournaments.

A significant lack of mutual trust is reported to exist among Sharma, Gambhir, and Agarkar. This situation has drawn comparisons to past controversies within the team management, such as the Sourav Ganguly-Greg Chappell incident.

The national selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is reportedly keen on providing extended opportunities to Yashasvi Jaiswal in the ODI setup. This plan is said to have the support of the Indian team management, including head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Leadership and Communication

The relationship between Rohit Sharma and the Gambhir-Agarkar duo has been described as lacking mutual trust. The three individuals are noted for their strong individual opinions.

Prior to a couple of years ago, Rahul Dravid was seen as a unifying figure between Sharma and Agarkar during successful campaigns, including the 2023 ODI World Cup in India and the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, which India won under Sharma’s captaincy. Gautam Gambhir’s approach is noted as being different from Dravid’s in terms of team management.

The apparent issues between Sharma and Gambhir have been likened to the Sourav Ganguly-Greg Chappell situation in 2005. During the 2024 IPL, when Kolkata Knight Riders played an away game against Mumbai Indians, and with Dravid’s departure as head coach anticipated, Gambhir was a leading candidate for the position. A person close to the former India captain recalled Sharma approaching Gambhir during a training session at Wankhede, suggesting he join the Indian team. Gambhir reportedly responded that he would join if Sharma remained captain.

However, there were also warnings to Sharma about the challenges of working with Gambhir, given his previous experience with Dravid’s man-management style. Apprehensions proved to be not unfounded, as issues reportedly began to surface when India lost the Test series to New Zealand at home 0-3, with relations deteriorating further by the time of the Australia Tour.

On January 2, before the start of the New Year’s Day Test against Australia at Sydney, Sharma was observed in a lengthy discussion with Gambhir and Agarkar at the SCG during team training. Sources close to the selection panel indicate that Agarkar had advised Sharma against sitting out, suggesting it could impact his selection for the subsequent series in England, scheduled six months later.

The lack of clarity and communication is believed to have affected Sharma’s batting style, leading to a decline in results. The disappointment was significant when Agarkar reportedly informed Sharma about moving on with a view towards the 2027 World Cup, with both Agarkar and Gambhir reportedly aligned on this decision.

Sharma’s faith and trust were reportedly further impacted when he was removed from the 50-over captaincy in the series following India’s Champions Trophy win. This occurred despite a lack of 50-over cricket after the IPL that would have allowed him more game time. The next ODI for India after July 19 at Lord’s is scheduled for September 27 against the West Indies at home.
