England’s World Cup Journey Continues

England captain Harry Kane believes the team possesses an untapped potential, stating they “have another level we can reach” in their pursuit of a World Cup title. This comes as England prepares for a semi-final clash against Argentina in Atlanta on Wednesday, following their 2-1 extra-time victory over Norway on Saturday.

Following the quarter-final match, manager Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with England‘s performance, describing the team as having “got lucky” and being “sloppy.” He also noted “a lot of technical mistakes” and a lack of speed and repetition in their play. Kane, who has scored six goals in the tournament, making him England‘s joint top goalscorer alongside Jude Bellingham, attributed Tuchel‘s frustrations to the team not replicating their training form.

Kane acknowledged that while they are playing against strong opposition, Tuchel is pushing them to reach their full potential. He stated that the team has shown glimpses of their capability but has not yet achieved the full control they desire. Despite this, Kane highlighted the positive aspect of reaching a semi-final while still feeling there is room for improvement.

Controversy in the Quarter-Final

The match against Norway was not without controversy, particularly concerning Jude Bellingham‘s equaliser. Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken asserted that the ball struck an overhead camera cable before the goal. The incident occurred late in the first half when Norway goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland‘s goal kick appeared to make contact with a suspended camera wire. England subsequently regained possession, leading to Bellingham‘s goal.

Both Nyland and Solbakken appealed to the referee, arguing that play should have been stopped. However, their protests were dismissed, and the goal stood. Television replays suggested contact between the ball and the cable, but FIFA maintained there was “no evidence that the ball touched the overhead wire and changed the movement of the ball.”

Solbakken explained that the referee was unaware of any contact and did not receive any message indicating it had occurred. He noted that the ball fell directly in front of the bench, suggesting contact, and expressed that everyone witnessed what happened. Under the Laws of the Game, if officials determine that the ball has touched an outside object like an overhead cable, play should be stopped and restarted with a dropped ball. Since no contact was detected by the officials, play continued, and England capitalised.

Despite his disappointment, Solbakken chose not to dwell on the incident, instead praising his players for their tournament efforts. He described the situation as bizarre but acknowledged it as part of football. He also felt the unexpected trajectory of the ball after the alleged contact led to confusion among his players at a critical moment.

Looking Ahead to the Semi-Finals

While Kane agreed with Tuchel‘s assessment, Bellingham, who scored twice in England‘s last two matches, offered a different perspective. He emphasised the difficulty of playing in such conditions against a strong Norway team, including players like Erling Haaland, Martin Ødegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Alexander Sørloth. Bellingham expressed his appreciation for the effort put in by his teammates.

England, who were World champions in 1966, have reached the semi-finals for the fourth time. Their previous semi-final appearances resulted in losses to West Germany in 1990 and Croatia in 2018. The team has also experienced defeats in recent European Championship finals, losing to Italy on penalties in 2021 and to Spain two years ago.

Kane described the current era of the national team as “extremely successful” and highlighted that getting “over the line” is the missing piece. He noted that the team is consistently reaching semi-finals and finals, indicating a significant week ahead. Kane stressed the team’s desire for the badge over the past six weeks and the need for an even greater push in the coming period. He concluded by stating that being in a World Cup semi-final is something to be enjoyed, as it has not always been the case for the national team.
