England has ascended to the top spot in the latest ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings following a series of victories at home against the reigning T20 World Champions. This achievement marks the end of India’s more than 1,600-day tenure at the number one position, which began in February 2022.
The shift in rankings comes after England secured a 4-0 series whitewash against India. This dominant performance included a significant win in Southampton, where Harry Brook and Jos Buttler played pivotal roles in dismantling India’s bowling attack.
Buttler and Brook’s Record Partnership
In the fifth T20I in Southampton, Jos Buttler and Harry Brook formed a formidable partnership, contributing to England’s commanding performance. Buttler, the opener, scored a century, while captain Brook remained unbeaten with 95 runs. Their combined effort resulted in a 233-run partnership for the second wicket, setting a new T20I record.
Buttler’s century, a quickfire 131 runs off 64 balls, was a highlight of the match. He also achieved his quickest half-century in T20Is during this innings. Brook’s contribution was an explosive 95 not out from just 45 deliveries, showcasing powerful hitting.
The partnership between Buttler and Brook for the second wicket spanned 102 balls, further solidifying their record-breaking stand. Together, they hit a total of 16 sixes, with eight coming from each player, demonstrating their aggressive batting style.
Before the final T20I, the England skipper had publicly stated the team’s ambition to claim the No. 1 ranking, a goal they successfully achieved with their strong performance.
Series Domination and India’s Challenges
The series commenced with a match in Chester-le-Street that was affected by rain. Following this, England proceeded to dominate the subsequent four games. Their victories included handing India their largest defeat in T20Is in Nottingham and successfully chasing down a target of 159 runs in just 13.4 overs in Bristol.
India’s chase in the fifth T20I saw them finish on 201/8 in their 20 overs, despite half-centuries from Ishan Kishan, who scored 56 off 35 balls, and Tilak Varma, who contributed 53 off 25 balls. These efforts, however, were not enough to challenge England’s total of 257/3.
Under the new leadership of Shreyas Iyer, India has faced difficulties in securing victories since their World Cup win in Ahmedabad earlier this year. The series loss to England marks the sixth defeat in seven matches for India under Iyer’s captaincy.
The performance of India’s bowlers came under scrutiny during the series. Axar Patel conceded 63 runs in his four overs, while Prince Yadav gave away 60 runs in his four overs. Suryansh Shedge, who was brought into the team due to Harshit Rana’s absence with a grade 1 hamstring tear, also struggled, conceding 39 runs in three overs.
The series outcome has resulted in India dropping to second place in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings, following a 2-0 series defeat to Ireland late last month, which contributed to their overall 4-0 series loss to England.

Buttler’s batting was particularly impactful, with his first 50 runs coming off 34 balls, and his next 50 off just 17 deliveries, showcasing his ability to accelerate the scoring rate. Brook, on the other hand, reached his half-century in just 19 balls, displaying his rapid scoring capability.
The Rose Bowl witnessed some powerful hitting from the England duo, particularly after Shreyas Iyer won his fifth toss and opted to field. While Prasidh Krishna managed to dismiss Phil Salt early, the visitors’ fortunes declined thereafter.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly called for a review of India’s performance following this series. The team’s struggles have led to discussions about the current setup, with observations pointing to a divided dressing room and a lack of trust among players due to frequent changes.
The approach of attacking at all costs, which had previously yielded success on home grounds with shorter boundaries, proved less effective for India’s IPL stars in the recent series, highlighting that a singular strategy may not always be universally applicable.

Brook’s footwork against spin, particularly against Axar Patel, was notable, as he lofted the bowler for two sixes in an over that yielded 25 runs. Against pacers, Brook maintained his shape for fuller deliveries and created room for shorter ones, hitting them over extra cover and long off.
The absence of key players, such as Harshit Rana, who was out for the remainder of the tour due to a hamstring tear, necessitated the inclusion of less experienced players like Suryansh Shedge. Shedge’s third over proved costly, conceding 24 runs, followed by a 21-run over from Prince Yadav, further highlighting the pressure on the Indian bowling attack.
The series concluded with England’s comprehensive 4-0 victory, securing their position as the new No. 1 team in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings.
