What the data shows
What does the future hold for Vaibhav Suryavanshi, the young cricketer who has taken the IPL by storm? Recently sold to the Rajasthan Royals for INR 1.1 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, Suryavanshi’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable, showcasing talent that belies his age.
At just 15 years old, Suryavanshi has already made a name for himself in the cricketing world. He made his first-class debut for Bihar at the tender age of 12, and by 14, he was not only playing in the IPL but also scoring a stunning 35-ball century. His performance in the U-19 World Cup final, where he scored 175 runs off 80 balls, further solidified his status as a prodigy.
His achievements don’t stop there. Suryavanshi holds the record for being the youngest player to score a half-century in the IPL, achieving this milestone at just 14 years and 32 days old. Additionally, he is recognized as the youngest centurion in T20 cricket, having scored a century off just 35 balls. By the age of 14, he had already amassed three T20 centuries, an impressive feat that speaks volumes about his potential.
According to Zubin Bharucha, a key figure in the Rajasthan Royals’ scouting team, Suryavanshi’s talent was evident from the very beginning. Bharucha recalled, “It reminded me of the first ball I saw Jaiswal face at a trial at DY Patil Stadium – he walked across and flicked it over short fine leg for four.” Such early observations highlight the natural ability that Suryavanshi possesses.
During trials, Bharucha noted a moment that stood out: “One of the sidearmers hit the deck hard, and Vaibhav hit it straight over the sightscreen for six. I asked for the ball speed, and it measured 157 kph! That’s not normal.” This level of performance at such a young age has led to a significant budget being set aside for him, with Rajasthan Royals initially planning to allocate up to INR 10 crore before the auction.
Despite being sold for INR 1.1 crore, the belief in his potential remains immense. Bharucha stated, “A budget of up to Rs 10 crore was kept in mind before the auction. He eventually came in at Rs 1.1 crore but the belief? That stayed huge.” This reflects not only the confidence the Royals have in Suryavanshi but also the expectations that come with such a significant investment.
As Suryavanshi turns 15 just before the start of IPL 2026, he becomes eligible to play international cricket, raising questions about his future in the sport. Will he continue to break records and set new standards? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: Vaibhav Suryavanshi is a name to watch in the coming years.
Details remain unconfirmed, but the cricketing world is abuzz with anticipation for what this young talent will achieve next. With the IPL season approaching, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Suryavanshi will perform on this grand stage.
