In a significant shift for electricity consumers in Uttar Pradesh, the government has introduced a new prepaid smart meter system that provides users with 15 days to recharge their accounts. This change aims to alleviate the rush often associated with recharging before losing power.

Previously, consumers faced the inconvenience of having their electricity cut off as soon as their balance ran out. The new system allows for a more structured billing process that resembles traditional postpaid methods.

Key features of the new prepaid smart meter system:

The prepaid smart meters will now function similarly to postpaid meters.

Consumers will receive monthly bills and have 15 days to make payments.

A facility for paying outstanding bills in 10 installments is available until April 30.

The bill will account for electricity consumption from the first to the last day of each month.

Bill notifications will be sent directly to mobile phones via SMS and WhatsApp.

The energy minister, A.K. Sharma, stated, “This step has been taken keeping consumer convenience in mind.” He emphasized that this enhanced billing system would make it easier for people to stay informed about their electricity usage and payments.

Moreover, consumers can file complaints regarding issues with smart meters or billing through the 1912 portal. To further assist consumers, the government plans to set up special camps aimed at addressing problems related to smart meters and billing.

The government has also issued strict directives regarding electricity supply to ensure a smooth transition into this new system. These changes are set against a backdrop of ongoing efforts to modernize the electrical infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh—an essential step for improving service delivery.

As this new prepaid system rolls out, it remains uncertain how effectively it will resolve existing issues linked with billing and consumer satisfaction. Observers are keenly watching how these changes will impact overall electricity management in the state.
