A significant increase in commercial LPG prices has led to widespread protests and shutdowns in Kerala’s food sector. The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has crossed ₹3,000 after a staggering ₹1,000 increase, prompting the Kerala Hotel and Restaurant Association to voice their outrage.

The cumulative hike in commercial LPG cylinder prices over the past five months totals ₹1,498. P.P. Abdurahman, a representative from the Association, stated, “The unilateral ₹1,000 increase is unprecedented in India and wholly unjustifiable.” He further warned that if such price increases continue, hotels and restaurants may have no choice but to raise food prices by 50% to 60% to stay afloat.

This situation is exacerbated by new government regulations aimed at promoting piped natural gas (PNG) connections. By June 30, 2026, households with PNG infrastructure will no longer be allowed to maintain LPG connections. Authorities are currently identifying households that utilize both services—a move that could further complicate access for many.

Key facts:

The price of a 19-kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by ₹1,000 recently.

The total hike over the last five months amounts to ₹1,498.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas introduced new rules regarding gas cylinder connections in March 2026.

Observers note that these changes reflect a broader governmental push to reduce reliance on LPG and encourage the adoption of PNG. However, this shift raises questions about accessibility for those who depend on traditional gas sources for cooking.

As protests unfold across Kerala’s food sector, the immediate impact on local businesses is palpable. With rising costs and new regulations looming, many fear that they may soon face tough choices about how to keep their establishments running.
