The numbers
In a significant move for gamers, Sony has announced a price increase for the PlayStation 5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, effective April 2, 2026. The PS5 will now retail for $649.99 in the United States, while the PS5 Pro will be priced at $899.99. The PlayStation Portal will see a new price of $249.99.
Isabelle Tomatis, a representative from Sony, stated, “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally.” This decision comes as the company grapples with rising production costs, inflation, and sustained global demand for its gaming consoles.
The price increase applies to both disc and digital editions of the PS5, which was initially released in November 2020. This marks the second price hike for the PS5 in less than a year, following an increase in August 2025. The new pricing structure will also affect major regions, including North America, Europe, and the UK.
In the UK, the PS5 will now cost £569.99, while the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at £519.99. The PS5 Pro will see a price of £789.99. In Europe, the PS5 will retail for €649.99, reflecting a consistent strategy across key markets.
Tomatis emphasized the necessity of this decision, saying, “We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.” This sentiment resonates with many in the gaming community, as the cost of joining the PlayStation ecosystem has increased significantly.
Industry analyst Mat Piscatella noted, “Gaming is trending towards becoming a hobby focused on high-earners,” suggesting that the rising costs may limit access for some gamers. As the gaming landscape evolves, the implications of these price increases will likely be felt across the community.
While Sony has not announced any changes to PlayStation Plus memberships or accessories, the overall trend indicates a shift towards higher pricing in the gaming market. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any future adjustments or potential new offerings from Sony as they navigate this challenging economic environment.
