The recent panic surrounding the LPG gas shortage in India raises an important question: Is there really a shortage of LPG, or is it a case of misinformation? The answer, according to government officials, is clear: there is no shortage of LPG in India.
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, stated, “There is no shortage of LPG at any distributorship.” This assertion is backed by significant increases in domestic refinery production, which has ramped up by 40 percent, bringing daily LPG output to an impressive 50 thousand metric tonnes. Oil companies are successfully delivering over 50 lakh cylinders every day, a feat that has helped stabilize supply amidst rising demand.
However, the demand for LPG cylinders had surged to 89 lakh due to panic ordering, leading to concerns about availability. Fortunately, this demand has since decreased to 50 lakh cylinders, indicating a return to normalcy. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has confirmed that all retail fuel outlets have adequate supplies of LPG, further alleviating fears of a crisis.
India’s fuel stock situation is also reassuring. The country has sufficient petrol, diesel, and LPG stock for nearly 60 days, with a total storage capacity of about 74 days for crude oil and fuel. This ample supply is crucial, especially considering that India meets more than 40 percent of its crude imports and 90 percent of its LPG imports from West Asian countries.
Despite the government’s reassurances, the panic among consumers has been palpable. The Ministry has urged citizens not to be misled by what they describe as a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation.” This call for calm is essential in a time when misinformation can easily exacerbate supply issues.
As the situation stands, every Indian refinery is reportedly running at over 100 percent utilization, ensuring that production meets the current demand. The government has emphasized that there is no need for panic, and the supply chain remains robust.
Looking ahead, it remains to be seen how the government will continue to manage public perception and ensure that the supply of LPG remains stable. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any long-term strategies to prevent future panic, but for now, officials are focused on maintaining the current supply levels and dispelling fears of shortages.
