In a related initiative, the Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (Kufos) has unveiled a significant budget of Rs 75.5 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year. This budget includes Rs 37.50 crore earmarked for plan expenditure, alongside Rs 33.51 crore for non-plan expenditure and Rs 4.52 crore through externally aided projects.
Kufos is also making strides in the blue economy by planning to introduce industry-led PhD programs tailored to this sector. Furthermore, the university aims to establish a Centre of Excellence in Maritime Skills and Blue Economy, which will serve as a hub for research and innovation.
Additionally, Kufos will relaunch its MSc Marine Biology program with support from the Deep Ocean Mission, emphasizing the importance of marine research in understanding and preserving our oceans. To further promote excellence in fisheries education, Kufos will institute a ‘Kufos Fisheries Guru Award’ to recognize outstanding contributions in this field.
